It’s All Fives and Sevens
In terms of the music industry, most musicians are lucky if they’ve been in one successful band. Being in two is usually unheard of and is a real rarity. Mark Tremonti, though, can confidently list three popular bands on his resume: Creed, Alter Bridge, and his solo project Tremonti.
Tremonti as a man — came by the Loudwire studio recently, while promoting his album. Among other things, he blew their minds with his cover of Metallica’s “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” on a “Hello Kitty” guitar. He also treated them to a quick guitar lesson, which was a bit of what he does at guitar clinics. “It’s a combination of fives and sevens,” he says. “Let’s take scales out of it.” He goes over different legato phrasings that you can practice both to gain speed and dexterity. This is a great way to build up some chops.
Mark Tremonti, by the way, has been playing a PRS signature guitar since he was in Creed, and just released his first signature guitar amp with PRS. And, as we pointed out in a Gear Factor episode a few weeks back, you can use Mark’s PRS MT 15 Amplifier Head to sound like Slayer.
So whether you know him from Creed, Alter Bridge or his solo project Tremonti one thing can be certain; he is one nasty guitar player. If you watched the video, you can get some of the sense of his playing. He has slated quite the name for himself over the years by playing with his three successful groups. If by some chance you have not heard Tremonti, I highly suggest you go give them a listen. You will not be disappointed. Even if you aren’t a fan of the music you have to admit the gear is sweet.
