John Petrucci

A Legend Is Born

John Petrucci

Born on July 12, 1967, John Peter Petrucci grew up in Kings Park, New York.  Kings Park is  a small suburban town on Long Island.  This is where he began playing guitar at the age of 12. His early influences ranged from Steve Morse, Al DiMeola, Steve Howe and Allan Holdsworth, to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Alex Lifeson. At age 18 after graduating from high school, Petrucci attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was here, along with schoolmate/bass player John Myung where they fatefully met drummer Mike Portnoy. As a result, the three quickly clicked musically and formed the nucleus of what was to become Dream Theater.

In 1989, John met his wife Rena Sands. The two would later marry in September 1993.  This is quite the musical power couple, as Rena was the guitarist and founding member of the all-female metal band Meanstreak. Rena still plays music today, with the all-female tribute to Judas Priest appropriately named Judas Priestess who can be seen playing regularly throughout N. America.
