New from NAMM 2018 – Technology Products

This was an exciting year for Pro Audio at NAMM. AES and NAMM joined forces to create a new technology series, AES@NAMM. Many were on hand to listen to famous producers, engineers, manufacturers and educators share knowledge. Its a tight-knit community that grows every year. So much so that 2018 marked the opening of new Pro Audio-only halls at the show. This made for a bit of confusion as many companies were not in their normal homes. However, I found it to be exciting as I didn’t know what lurked around each corner. Here are a few of the most exciting products at NAMM 2018.

Everybody knows that Bose are speaker scientists. Their legendary L1 Model II system is renowned  for being a versatile powered speaker system. For the 2018 NAMM show, Bose unveiled the latest addition to their family, the S1 Pro System. The S1 is a compact multi-position PA system designed to be ready to perform, whenever you are. Use it as an all-in-one PA, floor monitor, practice amplifier, or Bluetooth music system.

The built-in rechargeable battery performs for hours. Fitted with a built-in handle, and weighing in at only 15lbs, the S1 is the ultimate road companion. The back of the unit features a 3-channel mixer with reverb and Bose’s ToneMatch processing for microphones and acoustic guitars. Not to mention, it also has an Auto EQ to ensure you sound your best.

Korg Prologue

Korg Prologue

Analog has been back and with Korg’s latest offering its officially here to stay. The long-awaited, Prologue is billed as Korg’s flagship, polyphonic analog synthesizer. We loved Korg’s four-voice Minilogue and monophonic Monologue but the Prologue is in another league. It boasts of gorgeous DSP-based effects with unheard synthesizer abilities.

Under the hood consists of a “multi-engine”. A VCO3 adds FM and digital waveforms which can be combined to create previously impossible sounds. Load your own oscillator creations or use the included Software Development Kit (SDK). The SDK will allow users to extend the capabilities of the multi-engine and effects. Korg Prologue comes in two flavors, 16-voice/ 61-key, or 8-voice/ 49-key and can store 500 user programs.

UA ArrowUA Arrow

The legendary preamps and converters of Universal Audio’s Apollo series are now available for the masses. UA’s Arrow is a Thunderbolt 3-powered audio interface with a small footprint. Its perfect for project studios or mobile sessions. Both Mac and Windows users will enjoy class-leading conversion and Unison mic preamps. The Unison mic preamps allow you to use legendary gear powered by the Arrow’s internal UAD-2 SOLO Core processor. These plug-ins won’t stress your system since the audio interface is doing the work.

It includes the 610 preamp, LA-2A and 1176 compressors, and a genuine Marshall Plexi amp plug-in. Most noteworthy, We also learned that it doesn’t come with a cable. It only works with Thunderbolt 3 so pick one up at time of purchase.

Sennheiser XSW 1-835SEN XSW1835DUALA

Sennheiser’s latest wireless offering boasts of an Evolution 835 capsule and 10 compatible channels in a stable UHF band. This year they made the XSW system one better and now they are available in a dual mic system. The E835 sounds robust and ultra-clear. It cuts through the mix and is one of my favorites. Pair this with antenna-switching diversity reception, and auto frequency management and synchronization. The easy-setup and attractive price makes this is an idea all-in-one wireless system for singers and presenters serious about sound quality.

Alesis Vortex WirelessAlesis

Everybody loves Keytars and Alesis brings reason to love them more. The Vortex is a USB/MIDI wireless controller equipped with an accelerometer. The result is freedom to play any instrument from your computer. The wireless connection is made using a USB dongle. It boasts of 37 velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch, 8 velocity sensitive drum pads, and physical knobs for tweaking. The neck has additional controls for moving through octaves and activating sustain. The control is unreal due to the MIDI assignable touch strip and accelerometer. Imagine engaging a filter every time you swing your keytar. Everything is easily programmed using the included patch editor. It even comes bundled with a synth and DAW making it the perfect gift for anybody new to computer recording.

NAMM always brings renewed excitement and passion to the industry. A year’s worth of research and development shows up to Wow people. Many times we have to wait but luckily, all of these products are available now, on American Music Supply.
